What are Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are tiny insects that feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals. The nymphs are very small, light in color and very hard to see with the naked eye. They can grow bigger and darker in color until they become about 5 mm in size and can live up to one year without feeding. These bugs are oval in shape and are flat from top to bottom.
How do I Know if I’ve Been Bitten by a Bed Bug?
It's hard to tell if you've been bitten by a bed bug unless you also spot signs that you're dealing with an infestation. It can take several days for bite marks to appear after the bite, in part because they inject an anticoagulant and an anesthetic with their bites. Once the bite marks appear, they look similar to flea or mosquito bites. Some symptoms include anxiety, insomnia, and skin problems caused by scratching the bites. Some people are allergic to bed bug bites, which can lead to painful swelling around the bit, enlarged bit marks, and in rare cases, anaphylaxis.
How do Bed Bugs Travel?
Bed bugs are experts at hiding. Their slim, flat bodies permit them to fit into the smallest of spaces and stay there for long periods of time, even without a blood meal. Cleanliness of the place does not limit their presence. Bed bugs can be found in five-star hotels and resorts as well.
What Causes Bed Bug Infestations?
Poor sanitary conditions do not cause bed bug infestations. But cluttered, untidy spaces and failure to detect an infestation on time can make the bed bug problem worse over time. A female bed bug can lay around 500 eggs in her lifetime and up to five eggs per day. Noticing the signs of bed bugs and taking quick steps to reduce their population can considerably lessen the risk of a severe infestation.
How do I Know if I Have Bed Bugs in My Home?
Determining if you have a bed bug problem or not can be difficult as these insects hide during the day and feed at night. While bed bugs can be found in any part of your home, they typically live in the bedroom.
