Daddy long legs have one of the strangest reputations in pest control. Many people have heard that they carry extremely potent venom but cannot harm humans because their fangs are too small to break skin.
That story does not match the evidence.
Part of the confusion starts with the name itself. “Daddy long legs” can describe several different animals. One common type is not a spider and has no venom glands. Another is a true spider that does have venom, but published research does not support claims that its venom poses a serious threat to people.
For homeowners, the better question is not whether every daddy long legs is dangerous. It is which animal you are looking at and whether its activity around your home needs attention.
What Is a Daddy Long Legs?
The name daddy long legs commonly refers to harvestmen, cellar spiders, and crane flies. They share a long-legged appearance, but they are not the same kind of animal.
The University of Florida IFAS separates the three groups by their anatomy and behavior. That distinction clears up much of the confusion surrounding daddy long legs venom and bites.

Harvestmen and cellar spiders cause most of the confusion because both are arachnid-looking animals with very long legs. Crane flies are insects with six legs and wings, so they are easier to separate once you know what to look for.
Harvestmen Are Arachnids, Not Spiders
Harvestmen belong to the order Opiliones. They are arachnids, which puts them in the same broad group as spiders, ticks, and scorpions, but they are not spiders.
Their bodies also look different. A spider has two main body sections. A harvestman has a body that appears more rounded and fused. Harvestmen do not have silk glands, so they cannot build spider webs. They also lack venom glands.
That last point settles one version of the daddy long legs myth. If the animal in question is a harvestman, it cannot be a deadly venomous spider because it is neither a spider nor venomous.
Cellar Spiders Are True Spiders
Cellar spiders belong to the family Pholcidae. These are the thin-bodied spiders homeowners often find sitting upside down in loose webs in protected parts of a building.
Unlike harvestmen, cellar spiders produce silk and have venom. They use that venom when capturing prey.
The fact that cellar spiders have venom does not mean that venom poses a major human health risk. Most of the old daddy long legs story comes from mixing a real biological trait, venom, with an unsupported claim about how dangerous that venom is.
Are Daddy Long Legs Poisonous or Venomous?
People often ask, “Are daddy long legs poisonous?” In biological terms, venomous is the more accurate word when an animal injects a toxin through a bite. Poison generally causes harm when it is eaten, touched, or absorbed.
For harvestmen, the answer is straightforward. They do not have venom glands.
Cellar spiders do have venom, but the Burke Museum’s arachnology program identifies the claim that daddy long legs have exceptionally powerful venom as an urban legend. The museum notes that cellar spiders possess venom, but evidence does not support the idea that it is unusually dangerous to humans.
So, are daddy long legs venomous? Some are, depending on what animal you are calling a daddy long legs. The more important point is that venom alone does not tell you how much danger an animal poses to a person.
Where the Deadly Daddy Long Legs Myth Goes Wrong
The familiar story usually makes two claims. The first says daddy long legs have some of the strongest venom among spiders. The second says people survive because their tiny fangs cannot break human skin.
Research does not support either part of that story.
Cellar Spider Venom Has Been Studied
A 2019 peer-reviewed study published in Frontiers in Ecology and Evolution examined venom from the cellar spider Physocyclus mexicanus.
Researchers tested the venom on crickets and measured an effective paralytic dose of 3.9 micrograms per gram. That figure describes what happened to insects. It should not be read as a measurement of toxicity in humans.
The same paper discussed human bites from the species. Reported effects involved a mild sting without lasting effects. Those observations do not match the claim that cellar spiders carry extremely dangerous venom.
This distinction matters because venom can work well against an animal’s normal prey without creating the same effect in a human. A spider’s ability to subdue an insect does not tell us that its venom is medically dangerous to people.
The Fang Story Does Not Hold Up Either
The second part of the myth claims that cellar spiders cannot break human skin.
The same 2019 study reported that Physocyclus mexicanus could penetrate uncalloused human skin. Reported bites still caused mild effects rather than the severe reaction the old story would predict.
That removes the supposed explanation for why a spider with “deadly” venom does not hurt people. At least some cellar spiders can pierce skin, yet the observed effects were mild.
Can Daddy Long Legs Bite Humans?
A harvestman does not have the spider fangs and venom glands involved in a typical spider bite. Calling a harvestman a dangerous biting spider mixes two different animals together.
Cellar spiders are different because they are true spiders. Some species can pierce human skin, as the published study above shows. Even so, the documented effects discussed in that research were mild.
That does not mean you should handle unfamiliar spiders. Florida has many spider species, and long legs alone are not enough for an identification.
If you find an unfamiliar spider inside your home, look at where it is living and whether it has built a web. Cellar spiders often stay in loose webs in sheltered spots. A harvestman does not make a web. Those clues can help you tell the difference without touching the animal.
Why Cellar Spiders Show Up Around Florida Homes
UF/IFAS reports cellar spiders in household corners, under eaves, in sheds, attics, basements, cellars, and other protected spaces. These areas give them places to build webs and wait for prey.
In Central Florida, homeowners may notice them in garages, attic areas, rooflines, storage spaces, and quiet indoor corners. Their location often tells you more than their long legs do.
Cellar spiders feed on insects and can also capture other spiders. If webbing keeps returning after you remove it, the area may have enough insect activity to support more spiders.
An occasional cellar spider is different from repeated web buildup throughout a home. When spider activity becomes frequent, it makes sense to look at the insects supporting that activity as well as the spiders themselves.
Daddy Long Legs Can Play a Useful Role
A long-legged arachnid near a porch or garage may look unpleasant, but these animals are not simply sitting there waiting to bite someone.
Cellar spiders catch insects in their webs and may prey on other spiders. Harvestmen feed on small invertebrates and organic material. In that sense, both can take part in reducing small pest populations around outdoor and sheltered areas.
That does not mean you need to leave webs in kitchens, garages, or entryways. It does mean there is little reason to treat every daddy long legs sighting as a health emergency.
The response should fit the problem. One spider in a corner may call for simple removal. Webs returning in several parts of the house may point to a larger pest issue.
When Spider Activity Around Your Home Needs Attention
For most homeowners, the main problem with cellar spiders is web buildup and recurring pest activity rather than venom.
Start with the places where you see them most often. Remove old webs from reachable corners, eaves, and storage areas. Check screens, doors, vents, and other openings that may allow insects inside. Reducing insect activity can also reduce the food available to spiders.
