Not all stinging insects are the same. Here’s how to tell if you’ve got wasps or something else:
These are the ones with the classic “pinched waist.” Their bodies are typically black or brown with yellow or reddish markings. Paper wasps and mud daubers are common in the Lake Mary area.
Larger than wasps, hornets can be over an inch long. The bald-faced hornet, common here, has a black body with white markings. They’re more aggressive and build enclosed nests high in trees or under roof eaves.
They look like honeybees but are more aggressive. They’re compact, black, and yellow, and usually nest in the ground or wall voids.
